MIAMI, November 23 The Cuban Art Project: Irreplaceable Group,Inc. is proud to present JAY JORGE ALVAREZ in “BE CAREFUL! THE SHARKS WILL EAT YOU!” at Area Stage Theateron December 4. In this remarkable one man show, Alvarez takes you on a thrilling ride that begins with his journey in 1964 from Cuba to Miami at 4 1/2 years old.
Enjoy the sizzle of The Tropicana in Havana, the high stakes of Batista’s fall, Fidel’s rise to power and the intimate tale of his family’s escape, as told through his father Humberto – that ultimately brings Jay to the heart of what it means to be Cuban and American.
The show, written by Alvarez and directed by Theresa Gambacorta, recently featured in the United Solo Theater Festival in Manhattan and returns to the prestigious Player’s Club in New York in January.
“It is a story filled with strength of character, laughter, identity, and hope,” according to nytheater.com. “Alvarez and Gambacorta do a lovely job taking the very specific story of the family’s flight from Cuba and weaving it with events and history…”
The Dec 4 show will also include a special musical appearance by Manny Salas, Musical Director for “Antiques.”

Jay Alvarez (PLAYWRIGHT/ACTOR) is a bi-coastal actor whose Los Angeles theatre credits include: “Havana Bourgeois” opposite Tony Plana, (Haywood Theatre), “Noblesse Oblige” (Stages Theatre) and the Ovation Nominated play “The Shelter” (The Odyssey Theatre) TV credits include: the unforgettable French Waiter on Fox’s “Til Death” with Brad Garrett and Joely Fisher and “The Soprano’s” as well as national commercials for American Express and McDonald’s. In addition to NYC and LA theatre, Jay has worked in Washington DC at The Shakespeare Theater, Kennedy Center Studio Theater and Gala Hispanic Theatre, among others.
With “Be Careful! The Sharks Will Eat You!,” Jay embarks on a completely different and new experience, honoring his parents and their journey to America. Theresa Gambacorta (DIRECTOR) is a NYC actress, playwright and director. “Be Careful! The Sharks Will Eat You!” marks Theresa’s seventh solo play that she has either written and/or developed and directed. In the development process, Theresa guides actors through structured improvisation and writing assignments to uncover the heart of their tale and render a rehearsal text. Solo shows written by Theresa include her Off-Broadway hit “La Magnani!” about Italian actress Anna Magnani, which ran for six weeks at The Arclight Theatre enrapturing audiences that included Eli Wallach and Anne Jackson and her hilarious solo play “Breaking The Glass”, directed by Cheryl King, which premiered at Stage Left and was also a part of Estrogenia Solo Voce Festival 2009. She has also developed and directed “Emergency Used Candles” by Chiara Montalto ( Cherry Lane Theatre) and the solo plays “ Dress Kiss Me” and “Just Back From Dreaming”, both by Marlene Nichols. Recent directorial credits include “Terranova” (Fringe Festival & Fringe Encore 2009) and “Rum Boogie” (The Looking Glass Theatre).
